AULC Executive Elections 2017 - Update
The recent elections were held for the posts of AULC Vice-Chair and Secretary and Treasurer.
Mark Critchley has been unanimously elected to serve as Secretary and Treasurer.
The votes for the post of AULC Vice-Chair were spread fairly evenly across the candidates and the three people with the highest number of votes all received the same number. Therefore, a 'run-off' vote will be held after Easter. The three people who will be taken forward to the next round are: Sonia Cunico, Ana de Medeiros, and Christine O’Leary.
Voting for the next round will take place from 18th April to 28th April. Candidates' statements and the voting form can be found here.
UNILANG: A certification scheme for language learning in higher education
The UNILANG certification scheme serves to help UK university students articulate and translate what their language learning outcomes mean in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
In 2016-2017, the following institutions are participating in the UNILANG scheme:
- Cardiff University
- Durham University
- Keele University
- Loughborough University
- The University of Bristol
- The University of Cambridge
- The University of Manchester
- The University of Leeds
- The University of Sheffield
- The University of Warwick
- The University of Worcester

18th AULC Annual Conference, Jan 2017
This year's conference took place at Queen's University Belfast on 12th and 13th January.
The theme of the conference was 'The Multilingual University: Inspiring teachers, transforming learners'.
The sub-themes included the following:
- Blended learning, elearning, languages and technology
- Building bridges in language and culture outside the classroom
- Inspiring teachers, transforming learners
- Enhancing professional competence
- Ensuring quality in teaching and learning (including assessment)

14th CercleS Conference 2016:
Enhancing Learners’ Creative and Critical Thinking: the Role of University Language Centres.
The Conference was held on 22-23-24 September 2016 at the University of Calabria. Details can be found on the conference website.
LSPHE: Languages for Specific Purposes in Higher Education
Languages for Specific Purposes in Higher Education (LSPHE) is an AULC special interest group which aims to bring together LSP practitioners from around the UK and beyond. The group have just launched their own website. Here, among other things, one can find information on future LSP events taking place across Europe.
'Shaping the Future of Languages in HE'
AULC is a partner in the national 'Shaping the Future of languages project, launched in June 2011. The project website provides resources to assist language centres and academic departments to promote the work they do, under three headings: shared identity, internationalisation and employability.
'Speak to the Future' campaign
AULC is a participant in the national 'Speak to the Future campaign', launched on February 15th 2011. In particular, we support Objective 4: "Every graduate qualified in a second language
This will prepare future leaders in business, the professions, voluntary organisations, education and research to thrive and communicate confidently in complex global societies "
As part of this campaign several AULC members celebrated the Festival of Languages on or around March 8th (Mardi Gras) in 2011. Read reports of these events. In 2014 Mardi Gras will be on March 4th, when we hope more celebrations will take place.
